Which Witch is Witch?
I have been reading a lot lately about what it means to be a Witch. This is a topic very close to home and one that I now feel compelled to comment on.I grew up on a small farm in rural Tennessee. When I was about seven or eight years old my grandmother explained.

What tradition do you follow?

I thought for my first article that I would introduce you to some of the different traditions which make up Witchcraft. First and foremost, Witchcraft is a personal reflection of ones self, and choosing a paths to follow is the most personal decision you can make. Here are a few of the different types of witchcraft traditions: 1734 Tradition: British tradition sometimes eclectic, based on the ideas of Robert Cochrane, a self-titled hereditary Witch. Alexandrian Tradition: Founded by Alex Sanders in England around 1960. It is similar to the Gardnerian Tradition. Alex drew much attention to his tradition and was referred to (by media) as the "King of Witches" Aglaian Wicca: Founded in 1982. Affiliated with the Covenant of the Goddess Organization, A three degree initiatory system. American Tradition of the Goddess or AMTRAD: Established in the middle of the 1980's, three degrees initiatory system, mostly eclectic, not very ceremonial. Aquarian Tabernacle Church or ATC: founded by Pete Pathfinder Davis in 1979. The church has many affiliated churches, and are based on British Traditional Wicca. Many followers of green witchcraft and druidry follow this path. Caledonii Tradition: A Scottish tradition which attempts to preserve the ancient festivals of the Scotland. Also known as the Hecatine Tradition. Church and School of Wicca: A correspondence school founded by Gavin and Yvonne Frost. They offer mail-correspondence courses, and other services to the community (for a fee). Dianic Tradition: Active since the 1970's, Goddess oriented, tradition, which shy's away from the "God"aspect. Eclectic Witch: A Witch that blends the ideas of many traditions or sources. Like a Witch's cauldron, ideas are added to season the brew, spice it up, make it more effective, etc. This 'tradition' that isn't really a tradition has the flexibility to endure changes, but sometimes lacks grounding. Generally, rituals are self-styled and covens are loosely structured. Faery, Faerie and Feri Traditions: Victor Anderson founded in the late 1960's, There are several different 'Faery'related traditions. Gardnerian Tradition: Founded by Gerald Gardner in the 1950's in England. Gerald was very public about his religion, which brought a lot of attention to his tradition. Hereditary Witch: A Witch that has come from a line of witches or can trace their family history to another witch. Kingstone Tradition: Founded in 1973 by the New Wiccan church, focuses on pastoral deities,a degree based coven. Kitchen Witch: A Witch who practices and focuses magic around the hearth and home. Usually well versed in herbs, gardening, and cooking related spells. Northern Way- Asatru: Based on old Norse gods. Pictish Witchcraft or Pictish Wicca: Mostly solitary. Based in Scottish tradition. Scotican Wicca: Fairly new tradition with a blend of several traditions: kitchen witch, pictish, and ceremonial. Seax-Wica or Saxon Wicca: Founded in 1973, by Raymond Buckland. Based on Saxon traditions. Coven members can work robed or sky clad, and can initiated through self study. Solitary Witch: A witch who practices the Craft alone. A Solitary may chose to follow any tradition, or make their own. Strega : A Italian tradition, which believes it can be traced back to a woman named Aradia. Teutonic Witchcraft: Is based on the lands and language of the Germanic race, and follow the legends and myths of the area. Traditional Witch: Bases their religion on historical beliefs of the tradition they follow or their own ancestry. Welsh Rite Gwyddonaid: Founded on the premise of following the Welsh/Celtic deities. This is just a few of the many traditions available to choose from, I hope that this has helped you on your journey. Lycian Goddess http://home.att.net/~lygoddess/contents.htm
